  • Dolcetto delle Langhe La Fusina

Another top find from a hunting mission at Vinitaly; having found my favourite Barolo, I then tasted all their other wines and no surprise they we all lovely! Another single vineyard beauty from the Abbona family. I have long enjoyed the Dolcetto grape variety for its cherry-like flavours and freshness, quite a contrast to Barolo. No lengthy aging, no oak aging just vibrant fruit but still with grip.

  • Dans l’Air du Temps Chardonnay by Jeff Carrel

One of Jeff’s self-proclaimed top five wines (of his own). Soft, rich, buttery Chardonnay but just a hint of oak, most comforting.

  • Dans l’Air du Temps Pinot Noir by Jeff Carrel

    5

50 Great Red Wines of the World: 93/100

“The nose sends aromas of black fruits, sweet spices and torrefaction” according to Jeff…and I’m getting some serious “chocolate”.

The palate is round and fresh with a smokey and fruity finish.

Good with fish, but even better with poultry, veal and scrambled eggs…

  • Peninsula de Lisboa Portuguese Red

Step-by-step we increase the intensity and complexity from the Lisbon Region. This time a blend of Castelão (50%) and Aragonez (50%) which is aged for six months in oak barrels. There’s a beautiful clean structure about this wine (maybe the absence of the rustic Touriga?). Harmonious and spicy. Yum.

  • Sanz Rueda 100% Verdejo

New 2020 vintage just arrived. Hurrah! Rueda has firmly established itself as one of the premium white wine regions of Spain with the white Verdejo grape as arguably its star attraction. This 100% Verdejo epitomises the style – it’s a young, dry, light, fresh fruity style with minerality and complexity. Drink now to end 2022.

  • Mooi Bly Chenin Blanc

The return of an old friend. Erik & Liesbet’s Chenin Blanc was the only one to hit the spot for me when we first visited South Africa. This new 2019 vintage is in. Hues of fresh, green edges make the colour very inviting. The nose is almost spicy and minerally at the same time. The palate is complex; dry and minerally but still quite rich. A very satisfying white wine.

  • Pietraluna Negroamaro del Salento

From the same stable as Anarkos, but made from 100% Negroamaro grapes. This is, without doubt, the best vintage of this wine to date.

It’s rich and full of spicey, chocolatey flavours. Maybe a hint of ginger. Going to be on our table this Easter, for sure.

  • Quinta de San Francisco Portuguese Red

Single Estate red from the Obidos region. Castelão (60%), Aragonez (20%),Touriga Nacional (20%) are aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels. This was my pick of the family’s three estate wines. Maybe it’s the Touriga Nacional which gives it an almost violet fruit over and above the soft, oakiness. It has won Gold at four separate competitions this year.

  • Anarkos Rosso di Puglia

    Anarkos Rosso di Puglia

The label is attention-seeking, as is the bright red plastic cork (not my favourite closure, I must admit, but the wine insisted I buy it! The wine has attitude and is a provocative one, railing against the plight of the region (see their website). The region reminds me of the Languedoc in France – loads of rubbish wines but increasing numbers of fanatics making really top wines as they should be made. This was one of my favourite winery visits af the last few years. The wine is made from a blend of the local varieties Primitivo, Negro Amaro and Malvasia Nera and should be consumed in conspiratorial bars in the south of Italy with huge helpings of pasta.

Previous vintages recommended; Recommended in The Daily Telegraph: “another one of Mark Hughes’ brilliant finds. Absolutely delicious blend of Primitivo, Negro Amaro and Malvasia. Lush and plush like velvet, also juicy, scented, intense, rich brimming with the smell of violets, deep purple plums and bitter cherries. Such a joy!
Recommended by Oz Clarke as one of his 250 best wines of 2012: “an excellent example of how southern Italian reds are starting to express their own fabulous originality. It’s bulging with youth and it’s soft, yet tempered by a nice edgy bitterness.”
