  • Du Plevaux Pinotage South Africa – Sorry OOS

    New vintage of  “a hidden gem” ( Platter’s 2016) just back in stock. A masculine Pinotage with a rich dark plum colour, complemented by a structured palate of coffee, chocolate & black berries which support the long soft finish. A minimal five months in barrels make it fruit-driven rather than too oaky.

  • Mooi Bly Chenin Blanc

    The return of an old friend. Erik & Liesbet’s Chenin Blanc was the only one to hit the spot for me when we first visited South Africa. This new 2019 vintage is in. Hues of fresh, green edges make the colour very inviting. The nose is almost spicy and minerally at the same time. The palate is complex; dry and minerally but still quite rich. A very satisfying white wine.

  • Château d’Or et de Gueules “Mon fut c’est du poulet?”

    Diane’s husband, Matthieu, demonstrates both his fine winemaking skills as well as his sense of humour with this wine. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin;
    Matthieu devised a special cuvee, just one barrel, to mark the birth of his baby five years ago. Whist he was away on business one day, Diane unwittingly blended the barrel together with others destined to be the Trassegum Red final blend.
    “Your’e kidding me?!!” said Matthieu on learning his barrel was gone. Translated from “Mon cul, c’est du poulet?” in French. In order not to offend sensitivities he replaced the vulgar “cul” (arse) with “fut” (barrel), and so the fith vintage of this birthday wine is Matthieu’s finest so far in his opinion. Lovely sort, round, fleshy Syrah with easy oak undertones.

  • Quinta de San Francisco Portuguese Red

    Single Estate red from the Obidos region. Castelão (60%), Aragonez (20%),Touriga Nacional (20%) are aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels. This was my pick of the family’s three estate wines. Maybe it’s the Touriga Nacional which gives it an almost violet fruit over and above the soft, oakiness. It has won Gold at four separate competitions this year.

    Laurent Miquel Nord/Sud Viognier

    100% Viognier and all the rich, almost oily texture that goes with it. 30% of the blend was aged in oak for 3 months so what you get is a bit of extra body and structure but no obvious oaky flavours.

  • Sobroso Portuguese White Herdade do Sobroso “Barrique Select”

    Creamy, soft and clean. This wine was aged in new oak barrels for a bare three months and then undewent a similar period “sur lie”. The result is rather Burgundian and goes into my “creamy whites” category.
    The Herdade do Sobroso is on the banks of the Guadiana River which was known in roman times as “Flumen Anas” – River of Ducks. Guess why…..yes, because there are loads of ducks here.

  • “The Inspector General” from The Treaty Port Estate China

    From a vineyard established in 2005 on the Shandong peninsula by Chris Ruffle comes this classic Bordeaux blend, aged in french oak barrels and displaying ripe, dark fruits and a hint of vanilla oak. No surprise that Chateau Lafite chose to make their first Chinese wine, Long Dai 2017, from neigbouring fields! Chris’s vines are older, of course, and 2014 was an excellent vintage. This is a limited release of 5000 bottles.

  • Dogliani La Fusina

    100% Dolcetto grape variety at its most expressive here from the Dogliani DOCG. Deeply coloured, perfumed of dark cherries, brooding and soft. Not a variety to be aged in oak in my opinion and this one isn’t.
