“Zinfandel” Primitivo di Manduria from Felline
With the huge success of Fellone, I decided that Primitivo needed a closer inspection, so here’s one of four new ones, all from Felline down in the south of Italy. This one is a slight variation, being styled “Zinfandel Californiano”. That’s what they call it over there but is a strain of Primitivo all the same. Terroir is Mandurian black soil and the 15% wine was aged for six months in French and American oak.

Another smart red from the Estate. Try this varietal which is a minor one in Bordeaux, more common in the Loire, but great here in South Africa.

Domaine Métairie d’Alon “Solaire” Pinot Noir 2015
Top Pinot Noir made by a Burgundian in the south of France. The part of the vineyard called “Solaire” was identified as best for Pinot Noir, so that’s what they planted there 17 years ago. The vines are mature and producing a remarkable Pinot Noir. dare I say more Nuits St Georges than Cotes de Beaune! The organically grown grapes were hand picked and then aged for nine months in oak barrels.

Domaine de la Pigeade Muscat de Beaumes de Venise
The southern Rhone is probably best known for its reds such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas …..and Vacqueyras. But they also make one of the best dessert wines around and here’s a pretty smart one! Deliciously grapey, fleshy, fragrant Muscat grapes have the fermentation stopped by the addition of alcohol leaving the wine naturally sweet. The Domaine recommends it be drunk very cold not only as a dessert wine with, say, chocolate fondant but also with blue cheese or even with foie gras to start with.

Abbotts & Delaunay “Cumulo Nimbus” Minervois
A blend of Syrah, Carignan and Grenache which really showcases one of the Languedoc’s fine range of regional appellations. 40% of the handpicked grapes are aged in oak following fermentation. The result is a fat, structured red but it’s not “in your face” it’s really very nicely balanced.
