  • Giravolta Primitivo di Manduria

Based on the huge popularity of “Fellone” I thought we should have a closer look at the Primitivo grape. Here’s one of four more, each with a distinct “terroir”. What’s the Italian for “terroir”, I wonder? This one  is distinctive due to the calcareous white soil of the vineyards. Aged for nine months in French oak.

  • “Zinfandel” Primitivo di Manduria from Felline

With the huge success of Fellone, I decided that Primitivo needed a closer inspection, so here’s one of four new ones, all from Felline down in the south of Italy. This one is a slight variation, being styled “Zinfandel Californiano”. That’s what they call it over there but is a strain of Primitivo all the same. Terroir is Mandurian black soil and the 15% wine was aged for six months in French and American oak.

  • Rioja Martinez Alesanco “Eco” Organic

So much to say! Tim Atkin gives it 90/100. The 2016 vintage marks the second coupage, or blending, of this organic Tempranillo with 14% Garnacha Tinta, sourced from two plots facing each other at 650 meters in the small village of Badarán. Predominantly fruit with a touch of wood. It is refreshing, juicy, with fine tannins and red and black fruits.”

It’s an oaky Crianza, needs no more aging.

  • Abbotts & Delaunay “Cumulo Nimbus” Minervois

A blend of Syrah, Carignan and Grenache which really showcases one of the Languedoc’s fine range of regional appellations. 40% of the handpicked grapes are aged in oak following fermentation. The result is a fat, structured red but it’s not “in your face” it’s really very nicely balanced.
