  • Miguel Merino Rioja Mazuelo de la Quinta Cruz

Miguel explains how they are able to produce a wine from 100% of his lesser-used varietal. “Mazuelo is a fertile, vigorous plant which requires a long-cycle to reach complete ripening. It is also sensitive to many diseases. All these explains why Mazuelo is more adequate to the Mediterranean latitudes than to an Atlantic influenced land as Rioja Alta.
Only the extraordinary characteristics of our Quinta Cruz vineyard allow us to make this wine in our town.”

  • I Ciacca “Nostalgia” Maturano White from Lazio

    I Ciacca “Nostalgia” Maturano

Once in a while a wine insists you must buy it, here’s one. Rich, fat, mouth-filling, complex, creamy and the most beautiful colour you’ll ever see on a white wine. A truly top class Italian white.

Ever heard of the “Maturano” grape variety? Nor I.

The Di Ciacca family, a third-generation Scots-Italian clan, has been working to bring this indigenous, organically-grown grape variety back to life on the family’s estate in Picinisco, in Lazio.

Italian consultant Alberto Antonini (named as one of the world’s top 5 winemakers by his peers) is guiding Di Ciacca’s Maturano mission.

  • Miguel Merino Rioja Reserva Vitola

Differs from Miguel’s Reserva 2013 in that it’s released slightly earlier, so a little less barrel age. No less stunning!

  • Brunelli Amarone Classico

Luigi Brunelli’s Amarone Classico is a perfect example of this wine as defined by Cassiodorus: “drinkable purple of incredible smoothness”. Multiple Gold-medal winner, and for me, the best Amarone I tasted out of over 100 at the Vinitaly Trade Wine Fair in Verona.

  • Dunico Primitivo di Manduria

Based on the huge popularity of “Fellone” I thought we should have a closer look at the Primitivo grape. Here’s one of four more, each with a distinct “terroir”. What’s the Italian for “terroir”, I wonder? This one is distinctive due to the sandy soil of the vineyards. Aged for over nine months in French oak it’s a whopping 16% alc but despite that, it’s the most complex of the range, maybe that’s what you expect for nearly £30 a bottle.

  • Barolo La Fusina

Another top find from a hunting mission at Vinitaly; my favourite Barolo from over 120 tasted. This single vineyard beauty from the Abbona family is, like all Barolos, made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, the king of Piedmont reds! Aged for 30 mnonths in french oak barrels and then a further 8 months in bottle before release. 2016 is one ot the top vintages of the past decade.
