  • Domaine de Cray Cremant de Loire

I went to the Wine Fair in Paris in February to hunt out a Loire Sauvignon Blanc. After much tasting found a firm favourite in Domaine de Cray. As luck would have it, they also produce this very smart fizz. Made by the “Champagne” method with two years’ aging on the lees before disgorging.

  • Pinot Noir by Jeff Carrel

Light colour as you’d expect from cool climate Pinot Noir. Grown in the south of France, yes, but in high altitude vineyards which are cool. Developed by Jeff with one of his best mates from Burgundy to produce a light burgundy-style red.

  • Chateau Lamothe-Vincent Bordeaux Superieur Heritage Red

The classic Bordeaux blend, of course, is Cabernet/Merlot, and here we have a classic indeed, but with 80% Merlot. Very St-Emilion-esque! Multiple-Gold-Medal winner, this “Heritage” cuvee has been aged in French oak barrels for 12 months and is quite simply as typical a claret as you could wish for at a very affordable price. Drink now to 2024.

  • Le Grenache Under my Skin by Jeff Carrel

Big, soft, creamy tannins….I’ve got you under my skin….15.5% of lovely Grenache, which, by the way, is the predominant grape variety in a Chateauneuf du Pape….just saying….

  • Laurent Miquel Chateau Cazal Viel Vieilles Vignes

Classic Languedoc blend of old vines Syrah for the grip and colour and fruit, Grenache for fruit and Mourvedre for perfume. It’s big and dark and 15% alc. A year in 2 and 3 year old oak barrels to soften it out so it’s both great with food or on its own. 91 Parker Points. Drink now to 2025

  • Château d’Or et de Gueules ‘Trassegum’ Red

Château d’Or et de Gueules ‘Trassegum’ Red

Selected from the best parts of the vineyard, this is a blend of Syrah, Carignan and Mourverdre. Each varietal is kept apart and aged in 500 litre oak barrels for 12 months. Only then do they decide upon the final blend. Once made, the finished wine is aged for yet another 12 months in those same barrels before bottling. Only 10% of the barrels are new wood, so there’s no “in your face ” oakiness here!
Diane only releases this wine if she feels it is up to her highest standards of quality. So, no 2002 vintage ‘ it was all sold off in bulk to the ‘négociants’. The 2003 vintage was a cracker. No 2004 vintage either; that, too, was not good enough, the 2005, 2007 and 2009s brilliant…as was the 2011.
And then along came the equally scrumptious 2103, and the super 2015 and now the fab 2016. What more can I say? Drink now to 2026 (really!)

  • Domaine Métairie d’Alon “Le Village” Pinot Noir

Classy Pinot Noir from the south of France. Hand picked organically grown grapes were fermented in stainless steel vats and 40% of the blend spent six months in 4-6 year old barrels. So you get subtle well-balanced wine which is not overtly oaky. Great alternative to a Burgundy at twice the price!
