Felline Primitivo di Manduria
Based on the huge popularity of “Fellone” I thought we should have a closer look at the Primitivo grape. Here’s one of four more, each with a distinct “terroir”. What’s the Italian for “terroir”, I wonder? This one is distinctive due to the red soil of the vineyards. Aged for six months in French oak.

“Zinfandel” Primitivo di Manduria from Felline
With the huge success of Fellone, I decided that Primitivo needed a closer inspection, so here’s one of four new ones, all from Felline down in the south of Italy. This one is a slight variation, being styled “Zinfandel Californiano”. That’s what they call it over there but is a strain of Primitivo all the same. Terroir is Mandurian black soil and the 15% wine was aged for six months in French and American oak.

Fellone Primitivo di Puglia
Maybe one for sipping into the early hours after all your guests have gone home……
If you thought Anarkos was good, then here’s his big, big brother! Simply put, this red wine is delicious and if ever you doubted you would spend over £20 a bottle on a red wine from southern Italy, then doubt no more. It is made only in exceptional vintages (a bit like Vintage Port) when climatic conditions allow a long, late maturity in the vineyard and the resultant wine has a hint of natural sweetness to balance its rich red fruit.
Drink now to end 2030.

I Ciacca “Nostalgia” Maturano White from Lazio
I Ciacca “Nostalgia” Maturano
Once in a while a wine insists you must buy it, here’s one. Rich, fat, mouth-filling, complex, creamy and the most beautiful colour you’ll ever see on a white wine. A truly top class Italian white.
Ever heard of the “Maturano” grape variety? Nor I.
The Di Ciacca family, a third-generation Scots-Italian clan, has been working to bring this indigenous, organically-grown grape variety back to life on the family’s estate in Picinisco, in Lazio.
Italian consultant Alberto Antonini (named as one of the world’s top 5 winemakers by his peers) is guiding Di Ciacca’s Maturano mission.

Brunelli Campo del Maestro “9 Grapes Appassimento”
This “cru” is dedicated the grape Master, who managed this vineyard in the past and who dared to suggest an Amarone could be improved by a non-local variety. So 8 grapes became 9 grapes and the wine was declassified. “I can’t believe it’s not Amarone”
Corvina Veronese 40%, Oseleta 20%, Rondinella 5%, Negrara 5%, Corvinone 10%, Croatina 5%, Forselina 5%, Dindarella 5%, Cabernet Franc 10%.

Dunico Primitivo di Manduria
Based on the huge popularity of “Fellone” I thought we should have a closer look at the Primitivo grape. Here’s one of four more, each with a distinct “terroir”. What’s the Italian for “terroir”, I wonder? This one is distinctive due to the sandy soil of the vineyards. Aged for over nine months in French oak it’s a whopping 16% alc but despite that, it’s the most complex of the range, maybe that’s what you expect for nearly £30 a bottle.

Brunelli Amarone Classico
Luigi Brunelli’s Amarone Classico is a perfect example of this wine as defined by Cassiodorus: “drinkable purple of incredible smoothness”. Multiple Gold-medal winner, and for me, the best Amarone I tasted out of over 100 at the Vinitaly Trade Wine Fair in Verona.

Majestic and exuberant, this superb Amarone Riserva is simply outstanding; a combination of grace and aggressive power. Campo del Titari is a nectar made only in the very best vintages and in limited quantities (3000 bottles), it is a wine for the bold: those who are capable of recognizing the strong emotions that inspired it. Oh, and by the way, a natural 17% alc, so not for the faint-hearted.
