La Remontada by Jeff Carrel
La Remontada – The Comeback. Named in honour of the Champions League’s greatest comeback when Barcelona beat PSG 6-1 to win 6-5 on aggregate back in 2017. And we welcome back this wine under its new name. Haven’t had it for a few years but it’s made like an Italian Ripasso (see our beauty from Brunelli). It’s a declassified (because the method is not recognised – Jeff again) Cotes du Roussillon and it’s very, very lovely! It has that lovely schistous (look it up) character typical of the Roussillon wines but is super-silky-smooth because of the extra maceration of skins. Drink, sip, enjoy.

Domaine d’Ansignan “Les Grenadines” by Jeff Carrel
Best Rose in Tasting. Decanter Magazine June 2022. 95/100. “A steal at the price. Stunning.”
Never say never…I wasn’t convinced by the pre-taste description, but why worry? If Jeff makes it chances are it’ll be a cracker. Guess what? I loved it.
It’s somewhere between a light red (Beaujolais Nouveau) and a Rose. Drink it nicely chilled and enjoy the cherry, redcurrant, strawberry flavours resulting from the blend of Grenache / Maccabeu / Carignan / Syrah / Pellut. Just perfect for the summer.
Les Grenadines comes from the fact that they are planting pomegranate trees next to the vineyard.

“The Prince” from The Treaty Port Estate China
From a vineyard established in 2005 on the Shandong peninsula by Chris Ruffle comes his unique, gold-medal winning, Petit Verdot/Arinarnoa blend. Gently oaky, this is a lovely clean, velvety red from one of the world’s new emerging vineyard areas. The Prince rather liked braised pork and Beijing roast duck, could go rather well with this wine!

Sanguinhal Estate Touriga Nacional Portuguese Red
Single Estate red from 100% Touriga Nacional grapes. I did taste the various blends at this quality level, but my personal taste was for this pure indigenous varietal which reeks of Portugal. Lovely deep, rich colour. An almost perfumed nose and a soft, smooth palate. Jolly nice!

La Tire Fitou by Jeff Carrel
Why La Tire?
Because « La Tire » is French slang for “the car”, and obviously the 2CV is symbolic of French automobiles and was first launched in 1948, the same year the AOP Fitou appellation came into existence. Drive my good man!60% 50 year-old Carignan vines / 40% Syrah
Jeff’s notes are; “Intense notes of blueberries, blackberries, pepper, liquid violets and scrubland, with delicate tannins and a nice crisp acidity. Plenty of freshness and tension.”

Château d’Or et de Gueules ‘Trassegum’ Red
Selected from the best parts of the vineyard, this is a blend of Syrah, Carignan and Mourverdre. Each varietal is kept apart and aged in 500 litre oak barrels for 12 months. Only then do they decide upon the final blend. Once made, the finished wine is aged for yet another 12 months in those same barrels before bottling. Only 10% of the barrels are new wood, so there’s no “in your face ” oakiness here!
Diane only releases this wine if she feels it is up to her highest standards of quality. So, no 2002 vintage ‘ it was all sold off in bulk to the ‘négociants’. The 2003 vintage was a cracker. No 2004 vintage either; that, too, was not good enough, the 2005, 2007 and 2009s brilliant…as was the 2011.
And then along came the equally scrumptious 2103, and the super 2015 and the fab 2017, and now the 2020. What more can I say? Drink now to 2029 (really!)Red BlendsBig & Robust RedsFrance2020750 ml14%+£16.00

Château d’Or et de Gueules “Mon fut c’est du poulet?”
100% Syrah, more Crozes hermitage than Chateauneuf du Pape.
Diane’s husband, Matthieu, demonstrates both his fine winemaking skills as well as his sense of humour with this wine. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin;
Matthieu devised a special cuvee, just one barrel, to mark the birth of his baby five years ago. Whist he was away on business one day, Diane unwittingly blended the barrel together with others destined to be the Trassegum Red final blend.
“Your’e kidding me?!!” said Matthieu on learning his barrel was gone. Translated from “Mon cul, c’est du poulet?” in French. In order not to offend sensitivities he replaced the vulgar “cul” (arse) with “fut” (barrel), and so the fith vintage of this birthday wine is Matthieu’s finest so far in his opinion. Lovely sort, round, fleshy Syrah with easy oak undertones.Shiraz/SyrahBig & Robust RedsFrance2020750 ml13-13.5%£16.00

Brunelli Ripasso “Pa’Riondo”
The quality of the 2017 vintage was so good that we stocked up so we could see it mature, and it has! Drinking beautifully now.
Rich, complex but very silky textures make this a delight. The Ripasso technique consists in refermenting a Valpolicella on the sugars and yeast-rich grape skins of the area’s top wine, Amarone.
This results in the wine becoming full-bodied, with a great concentration of colour and perfume. Corvina Veronese 65%, Rondinella 25%, Corvinone 10%.
