  • Felline Primitivo di Manduria

Based on the huge popularity of “Fellone” I thought we should have a closer look at the Primitivo grape. Here’s one of four more, each with a distinct “terroir”. What’s the Italian for “terroir”, I wonder? This one is distinctive due to the red soil of the vineyards. Aged for six months in French oak.

  • Château d’Or et de Gueules ‘Trassegum’ Red

Previous vintges recommended by Jancis Robinson: “Brilliant fruit, fine tannins…..serious build and potential.”

Selected from the best parts of the vineyard, this is a blend of Syrah, Carignan and Mourverdre. Each varietal is kept apart and aged in 500 litre oak barrels for 12 months. Only then do they decide upon the final blend. Once made, the finished wine is aged for yet another 12 months in those same barrels before bottling. Only 10% of the barrels are new wood, so there’s no “in your face ” oakiness here!
Diane only releases this wine if she feels it is up to her highest standards of quality. So, no 2002 vintage ‘ it was all sold off in bulk to the ‘négociants’. The 2003 vintage was a cracker. No 2004 vintage either; that, too, was not good enough, the 2005, 2007 and 2009s brilliant…as was the 2011.
And then along came the equally scrumptious 2103, now the fab 2015. What more can I say? Drink now to 2026 (really!)

  • Brunelli Ripasso “Pa’Riondo”

The Ripasso technique; After the Amarone has finished fermenting its already air-dried and concentrated grapes, the skins are removed from the juice and added to another Valpolicella and these yeast-rich grape skins and sugars get going again in the new wine. (They “re-pass” the skins “Ripasso”)

This results in the wine becoming full-bodied, with a great concentration of colour and perfume. Corvina Veronese 65%, Rondinella 25%, Corvinone 10%.

  • “Zinfandel” Primitivo di Manduria from Felline

With the huge success of Fellone, I decided that Primitivo needed a closer inspection, so here’s one of four new ones, all from Felline down in the south of Italy. This one is a slight variation, being styled “Zinfandel Californiano”. That’s what they call it over there but is a strain of Primitivo all the same. Terroir is Mandurian black soil and the 15% wine was aged for six months in French and American oak.
