  • Lucien Lardy Moulin-à-Vent Les Thorins 2021

A hugely exciting new range of Cru Beaujolais specially brought in to give us all a vinous Christmas treat, but don’t wait for Christmas.

Lucien is Laura’s dad. Quality runs in the family! His Moulin-à-Vent differs from the other Crus in this range in that it is a bit  deeper, richer, more structured and has a more Burgundian feel about it. More cherries and red fruit than parma violets. Certainly one to go with the Sunday Roast or Christmas Dinner.

  • Abbotts & Delaunay “Cumulo Nimbus” Minervois

A blend of Syrah, Carignan and Grenache which really showcases one of the Languedoc’s fine range of regional appellations. 40% of the handpicked grapes are aged in oak following fermentation. The result is a fat, structured red but it’s not “in your face” it’s really very nicely balanced.

  • Fellone Primitivo di Puglia

Maybe one for sipping into the early hours after all your guests have gone home……

If you thought Anarkos was good, then here’s his big, big brother! Simply put, this red wine is delicious and if ever you doubted you would spend over £20 a bottle on a red wine from southern Italy, then doubt no more. It is made only in exceptional vintages (a bit like Vintage Port) when climatic conditions allow a long, late maturity in the vineyard and the resultant wine has a hint of natural sweetness to balance its rich red fruit.

    Drink now to end 2030.

  • Rioja Martinez Alesanco Reserva “Seleccion”

    A very “select” wine.

“Pedro Martínez Alesanco Selección is our most personal wine and marks the future of our family’s wines. It is the perfect blend of the three most important varieties of our winery: Maturana Tinta, Tempranillo, and Garnacha Tinta. It is an unmistakable and stylish wine, where its varieties travel the roads of Badarán and the Upper Najerilla valley, giving us aromas of violet, lavender, ripe peach, and licorice.”

  • Laura Lardy Fleurie Les Côtes -sorry OOS, but try Laura’s dad’s Moulin-a-Vent.

A hugely exciting new range of Cru Beaujolais specially brought in to give us all a vinous Christmas treat, but don’t wait for Christmas.

Fleurie (along with Moulin-à-Vent and Morgon) are my favourite villages in Beaujolais and to repeat an often-told tale; I tasted over 120 different Fleurie producers at the Paris Wine Trade Fair and Laura’s was my stand-out by a long way.

Jean-Michel Dupré’s Morgon at £17 a bottle represents my best memory of what a top Crus Beaujolais should taste like. Then along comes Laura’s Fleurie which is like a turbo-charged version. So full of fruit and powerful “parma violet” flavours and with a structure which comes from eight months aging in large wooden casks before bottling. I can’t think of a finer example of Cru Beaujolais which can be drunk now and which will also age beautifully for a few more years yet.

Drink this with a wide variety of  foods; rich fish dishes, meats, cheeses. Maybe just avoid anything too spicey.

  • I Ciacca “Nostalgia” Maturano White from Lazio

    I Ciacca “Nostalgia” Maturano

Once in a while a wine insists you must buy it, here’s one. Rich, fat, mouth-filling, complex, creamy and the most beautiful colour you’ll ever see on a white wine. A truly top class Italian white.

Ever heard of the “Maturano” grape variety? Nor I.

The Di Ciacca family, a third-generation Scots-Italian clan, has been working to bring this indigenous, organically-grown grape variety back to life on the family’s estate in Picinisco, in Lazio.

Italian consultant Alberto Antonini (named as one of the world’s top 5 winemakers by his peers) is guiding Di Ciacca’s Maturano mission.
