There’s Chardonnay and there’s Chardonnay. Here’s a lovely example of Stellenbosch’s versatility showing how Chardonnay can be crisp, minerally, dry and nothing like the tired, old, over-oaked examples we see too much of in the supermarkets. Might even say “Chablis” if you didn’t know.

Dolcetto delle Langhe La Fusina
Another top find from a hunting mission at Vinitaly; having found my favourite Barolo, I then tasted all their other wines and no surprise they we all lovely! Another single vineyard beauty from the Abbona family. I have long enjoyed the Dolcetto grape variety for its cherry-like flavours and freshness, quite a contrast to Barolo. No lengthy aging, no oak aging just vibrant fruit but still with grip.

Cazas Novas Avesso “Colheita”
The second of our new wines just arrived in from Christiana at Carneiro Estate. This is 100% Alvarinho but still classified as We are excited to introduce a trio of super wines all from Cazas Novas in the north of Portugal, all made by Wimemaker of the Year, Diogo Lopes, and all made from the Avesso grape variety which is rapidly gaining kudos in Portugal. Wines made from the hand-picked grapes are aged sur lies for 4 months with “batonnage”.

Passole Nero d’Avola/Merlot di Sicilia,
This is a really successful blend of Nero d’Avola and Merlot bringing out the best of both varietals in a wine that is better than the sum of its two parts. The lovely rich but slightly light NdA bulked up a bit by rich and soft Merlot. It undergoes a slight “Ripasso” treatment. “Da uve leggermente appassite” as they say. This gives it extra oomph. Good depth, nice and silky.

Kinisia Merlot/Nero d’Avola di Sicilia
This is a really successful blend of Nero d’Avola and Merlot bringing out the best of both varietals in a wine that is better than the sum of its two parts. The lovely rich but slighly light NdA bulked up by rich and soft Merlot. This differs from the Passole in that it is predominantly Merlot backed up by NdA rather than the other way round. Then it spends eight months in oak barrels giving it a lovely, spicey and elegant texture. I’m getting blackcurrants and lots of chocolate!

Perfect party wine! Selected here to be a very different alternative to Champagne in every way; it is semi-sparkling so does not attract the higher Sparkling Duty rate. Prosecco grape is very much a light, fruity, versatile wine. Perfect also as a pre-dinner aperitif. Paolo Sacchetto’s Estate in the north east of Italy produces a range of wines, but this Prosecco is the one which stood out for me. Peninsula de Lisboa Portuguese Red
Step-by-step we increase the intensity and complexity from the Lisbon Region. This time a blend of Castelão (50%) and Aragonez (50%) which is aged for six months in oak barrels. There’s a beautiful clean structure about this wine (maybe the absence of the rustic Touriga?). Harmonious and spicy. Yum.
