  • Mooi Bly Chenin Blanc

The return of an old friend. Erik & Liesbet’s Chenin Blanc was the only one to hit the spot for me when we first visited South Africa. This new 2019 vintage is in. Hues of fresh, green edges make the colour very inviting. The nose is almost spicy and minerally at the same time. The palate is complex; dry and minerally but still quite rich. A very satisfying white wine.

  • Pietraluna Negroamaro del Salento

From the same stable as Anarkos, but made from 100% Negroamaro grapes. This is, without doubt, the best vintage of this wine to date.

It’s rich and full of spicey, chocolatey flavours. Maybe a hint of ginger. Going to be on our table this Easter, for sure.

  • Abbotts & Delaunay Minervois

A blend of Carignan and Syrah which really showcases one of the Languedoc’s fine range of regional appellations. 40% of the handpicked grapes are aged in oak following fermentation. The result is a fat, structured red but it’s not “in your face” it’s really very nicely balanced.

  • Quinta de San Francisco Portuguese Red

Single Estate red from the Obidos region. Castelão (60%), Aragonez (20%),Touriga Nacional (20%) are aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels. This was my pick of the family’s three estate wines. Maybe it’s the Touriga Nacional which gives it an almost violet fruit over and above the soft, oakiness. It has won Gold at four separate competitions this year.

  • Brunelli Bianco di Custoza

Voted  in both “money no object” and “best value for money” top 5 by our Virtual Tasters back in the day.

Bianco di Custoza has long been one of my favourite white Italian wines. Situated on the sunny shores of Lake Garda it is a blend of Trebbiano, Garganega, Cortese, Riesling and Malvasia grapes. The resultant wine is soft and creamy with a lingering minerally finish. Yummy!

  • Villa des Anges Reserve Red

One of those wines which make you stop in your wine-tasting tracks. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot (roughly a third of each) has been aged for 14 months in tanks with oak staves (!) before bottling. It’s enough to make you wonder whether or not you want to buy expensive claret again!

Gold Medals at Brussels, Lyon and Gilbert & Gaillard.

The classic Bordeaux blend, of course, is Cabernet/Merlot, and here we have a classic indeed. However, it’s Merlot dominated but with a rare 30% Cabernet Franc. Rich and very well-structured fruit.

  • Abbotts & Delaunay Cotes du Roussillon

A blend of Syrah and Grenache with a slug of “whole bunch” Carignan which once again showcases one of the Languedoc’s fine range of regional appellations. 40% of the handpicked grapes are aged in oak following fermentation. The result is a fat, structured red but it’s not “in your face” it’s really very nicely balanced.

  • Château d’Or et de Gueules “Parle a mon fût” Rosé

Following the runaway success of Mathieu’s Syrah, they have introduced a pink and here it is. It’s a light rosé made from a blend of Syrah and Grenache. Very, very low sulphur levels mean the colour is not as light as some, but it’s lovely and fruity, goes great with tapas and a mere 12% alc. What’s not to like?

  • De Meye Old Vine Chenin Blanc Stellenbosch South Africa

New from Philip at De Meye, a rich style of South Africa’s trademark white varietal planted in 1978. Barrel-fermented but rich enough to cope heroically with the oak. Lovey serious wine.
