  • Mas du Petit Nysse, Ventoux Red

A stylish property in the Rhone Valley. Full of spicey southern Rhone flavours and now with a bit of bottle age it is smooth and satisfying.

  • La Remontada by Jeff Carrel

La Remontada – The Comeback. Named in honour of the Champions League’s greatest comeback when Barcelona beat PSG 6-1 to win 6-5 on aggregate back in 2017. And we welcome back this wine under its new name. Haven’t had it for a few years but it’s made like an Italian Ripasso (see our beauty from Brunelli). It’s a declassified (because the method is not recognised – Jeff again) Cotes du Roussillon and it’s very, very lovely! It has that lovely schistous (look it up) character typical of the Roussillon wines but is super-silky-smooth because of the extra maceration of skins. Drink, sip, enjoy.

  • Blanquette de Limoux Domaine Rosier

My favourite Blanquette de Limoux from over 200 tasted at the Vinisud Trade Wine Fair a couple of years back. Blanquette de Limoux differs from Cremant basically in the grapes used; in this case Mauzac and Chardonnay. It has been lees aged for 12 months and is a lovely clean, creamy style. The Rosier family is rightly proud of this, their top cuvee.

  • Domaine d’Ansignan “Les Grenadines” by Jeff Carrel

Best Rose in Tasting. Decanter Magazine June 2022. 95/100. “A steal at the price. Stunning.”

Never say never…I wasn’t convinced by the pre-taste description, but why worry? If Jeff makes it chances are it’ll be a cracker. Guess what? I loved it.

It’s somewhere between a light red (Beaujolais Nouveau) and a Rose. Drink it nicely chilled and enjoy the cherry, redcurrant, strawberry flavours resulting from the blend of Grenache / Maccabeu / Carignan / Syrah / Pellut.  Just perfect for the summer.

Les Grenadines comes from the fact that they are planting pomegranate trees next to the vineyard.

  • “The Prince” from The Treaty Port Estate China

From a vineyard established in 2005 on the Shandong peninsula by Chris Ruffle comes his unique, gold-medal winning, Petit Verdot/Arinarnoa blend.  Gently oaky, this is a lovely clean, velvety red from one of the world’s new emerging vineyard areas. The Prince rather liked braised pork and Beijing roast duck, could go rather well with this wine!

  • Laurent Miquel Chateau Cazal Viel Vieilles Vignes

Classic Languedoc blend of old vines Syrah for the grip and colour and fruit, Grenache for fruit and Mourvedre for perfume. It’s big and dark and 15% alc. A year in 2 and 3 year old oak barrels to soften it out so it’s both great with food or on its own. 91 Parker Points. Drink now to 2025

  • Chateau Lamothe-Vincent Bordeaux Superieur “Libertae” No added Sulphur

Gold Medal at Terre de Vins

With 75% rich, supple, smooth Merlot backed-up by (frankly rare) Malbec this sulphur-free addition to The Lamothe-Vincent range  yet again breaks new ground.

First of all it’s just simply a really good claret! But the work needed to allow a fine wine to show its best without the addition of any SO2 at all is a testament to the skills of the winemaker and the philosophy whch runs through the Chateau from top to bottom.

  • Sanguinhal Estate Touriga Nacional Portuguese Red

Single Estate red from 100% Touriga Nacional grapes. I did taste the various blends at this quality level, but my personal taste was for this pure indigenous varietal which reeks of Portugal. Lovely deep, rich colour. An almost perfumed nose and a soft, smooth palate. Jolly nice!

  • White Rioja “Florentius”

Those lovely people from Florentino Martinez produce one of our best-selling wines – their dry, unoaked white. Whist on our most recent visit I also tried this off-dry wine for the first time and really liked it. It’s a floral style (think dry muscat). Drink chilled on its own or with a nice spicy Thai Curry!

Oh, and it was voted Best White Wine in the Rioja Cosecheros Awards

  • Pinot Gris “En Coteaux” by Jeff Carrel

Well, here’s a thing. I really love Alsace Pinot Gris. It’s my favourite Alsace varietal. But Alsace for some reason is very difficult to sell. Our Pinot Gris from Verus is superb, and that sells so what is going on? This wine from Jeff Carrel – yet another off-the-wall idea from him – is made from grapes harvested in Alsace but transported down to Jeff’s winery near Narbonne and fermented there. De-classified, obviously! But what you get is a lovely honeyed style of Alsace Pinot Gris in all but name.
