Excelsior Evanthius Cabernet Sauvignon
This Cabernet Sauvignon pays homage to Evanthuis, a Hackney horse that was imported by Excelsior in 1913. This Hackney sire was a champion in Britain and America, winning first prize four times at the London Hackney show and in New York, in the days when the Hackney was the king of the world. He went on to win many titles in South Africa, including that of Rosebank’s Champion Stallion.
This Cabernet comes from the oldest vines on the farm. They were planted in 1988 in the best calcareous soils.
Deep ruby red colour with a black core. This wine is full-bodied with aromas of blackcurrants, chocolate and cedar. The wine has rich, but soft tannins and a long finish.

Felline Primitivo di Manduria
Based on the huge popularity of “Fellone” I thought we should have a closer look at the Primitivo grape. Here’s one of four more, each with a distinct “terroir”. What’s the Italian for “terroir”, I wonder? This one is distinctive due to the red soil of the vineyards. Aged for six months in French oak.

Château d’Or et de Gueules “Le Fût entre 2 Chaises” ORANGE WINE
Following the runaway success of Mathieu’s Syrah, they have introduced a pink and now also an “Orange”. 100% Rolle grapes (aka Vermentino) fermented with the skins as you would a red wine, but no colour extraction, well, a bit – orange.

Jean Michel Dupré Beaujolais Villages Blanc La Ronze Blanche 2022
A hugely exciting new range of Cru Beaujolais specially brought in to give us all a vinous Christmas treat, but don’t wait for Christmas.
There’s a nice straw colour and a lemony nose, maybe a hint of caramel and citrus fruits. The palate is lean and minerally which to me is more reminiscent of a steely Chablis than a fat Macon so it goes really well with fruits de mer, fish dishes or just on its own as an apéro!
One third of the blend was aged in barrels for four months. So it’s not oaky, just rounded-out.
