  • Excelsior Sauvignon Blanc South Africa

One of our 12 Wines of Christmas as it makes a perfect party wine. Great quaffing wine, but rather a superior quaffing wine and also a good food wine. From a great Estate in Robertson! Green appley characters but not sharp. Refreshing and fruity, finishes with that touch of minerality which elevates it from the masses. Lovely winter wine, summer wine, spring wine, autumn wine….

  • Domaine Laffitte Sauvignon Blanc Gros Manseng

Probably our best-selling white. A clear candidate for our 12 wines of Christmas Offer.

An exciting, new take on Sauvignon Blanc from Gascony; blended with a bit of spicy, slightly sweet Gros Manseng and the result is very, very more-ish, thirst quenching and maybe a bit too easy to drink. Great for all occasions.

  • De Meye Unwooded Chardonnay Stellenbosch South Africa

Unoaked, fresh, crisp minerally Chardonnay for those who don’t like Chardonnay!

There’s Chardonnay and there’s Chardonnay. Here’s a lovely example of Stellenbosch’s versatility showing how Chardonnay can be crisp, minerally, dry and nothing like the tired, old, over-oaked examples we see too much of in the supermarkets. Might even say “Chablis” if you didn’t know.

  • Casabel Portuguese Red

Lovely soft red with vibrant cherry-like fruit. A great example of  just how much fun Portuguese wines can be.

This is a soft, yet well-structured, unoaked red from the Lisbon Region. If the Cerejeiras is defined by easy fruit, this has a bit more oomph, so will take richer food. It has lovely clean fruit character.

  • Anarkos Rosso di Puglia

Probably our best-selling red. A clear candidate for our 12 wines of Christmas Offer.

Previous vintages recommended; Recommended in The Daily Telegraph: “another one of Mark Hughes’ brilliant finds. Absolutely delicious blend of Primitivo, Negro Amaro and Malvasia. Lush and plush like velvet, also juicy, scented, intense, rich brimming with the smell of violets, deep purple plums and bitter cherries. Such a joy!
Recommended by Oz Clarke as one of his 250 best wines of 2012: “an excellent example of how southern Italian reds are starting to express their own fabulous originality. It’s bulging with youth and it’s soft, yet tempered by a nice edgy bitterness.”

The label is attention-seeking, as is the bright red plastic cork (not my favourite closure, I must admit, but the wine insisted I buy it! The wine has attitude and is a provocative one, railing against the plight of the region (see their website). The region reminds me of the Languedoc in France – loads of rubbish wines but increasing numbers of fanatics making really top wines as they should be made. This was one of my favourite winery visits recently. The wine is made from a blend of the local varieties Primitivo, Negro Amaro and Malvasia Nera and should be consumed in conspiratorial bars in the south of Italy with huge helpings of pasta.

  • Sobroso Portuguese White Herdade do Sobroso “Barrique Select”

Creamy, soft and clean. This wine was aged in new oak barrels for a bare three months and then undewent a similar period “sur lie”. The result is rather Burgundian and goes into my “creamy whites” category.
The Herdade do Sobroso is on the banks of the Guadiana River which was known in roman times as “Flumen Anas” – River of Ducks. Guess why…..yes, because there are loads of ducks here.

  • Brunelli Ripasso “Pa’Riondo”

This is a serious contender for the Hughes Family Turkey Dinner Red.

Rich, complex but very silky textures make this a delight. The Ripasso technique consists in refermenting a Valpolicella on the sugars and yeast-rich grape skins of the area’s top wine, Amarone.

This results in the wine becoming full-bodied, with a great concentration of colour and perfume.Corvina Veronese 65%, Rondinella 25%, Corvinone 10%.

  • Herbert Zillinger Unfiltered Traminer “In Haiden”

“Out of the ground: a smoky, fat minerality. And the Traminer grape itself plays its cards: rose petals and juicy lychee, some citrus, gingerbread spice, cardamom and a subtle sweetness lend this wine elegance and a long finish.” – So says Herbert. For me it’s one of those wines which mugs you from behind! I just wasn’t expecting anything like it…..
