New vintage 2016 just released. I’ve not tasted it myself yet, but I have such high confidence in Fabien’s skills that I don’t doubt its worthiness for a second and will be stashing away a dozen or so bottles to opened on my 70th birthday (8 years away!)
It already has the following gongs;
Gold Medal at the 2018 Bordeaux wines Competition.
Gold Medal at the 2018 Brussels worldwide Competition.
Gold Medal – 90/100 – at the 2018 Los Angeles International Wine Competition.
Gold Medal at the 2018 Entre-Deux-Mers Wines Competition.
Gold Medal – 90/100 at the 2018 Gilbert & Gaillard International Competition.
Of the 2015 my tasting notes were;
“The colour is deep and seductive, dark and dense like essence of Ribena which indicates it will have a long life.
The nose still has some way to develop despite being decanted (into a magnum claret jug which Mrs H. and I received from Peter Sichel as a wedding present in 1986) some 10 hours before we drank it, but it really does exude parma violet Merlot scents alongside the cigar-box overtone resulting from the 16 months in new oak barrels.
We sipped and slurped our way through the two bottles as testified by our purple stained lips and teeth.
The taste revives my memories of 1984 tasting the 82s and 83s direct from the barrel. I enjoy young fine wine but I really must try and wait another year before tasting again.
It would be a shame to drink it all before it reaches its peak sometime in the next 10-20 years!”
“Deep black colour with purple tints. Powerful and complex bouquet of liquorice, black cherry, blackberry, graphite, cedar, toast… Extremely rich though elegant, its full, silky and coated tannins wrap you in softness. Mineral-toasty nuances on the long finish. A pure expression of its rare origin”.
