  • Abbotts & Delaunay, Minervois, France

    A blend of Carignan and Syrah which really showcases one of the Languedoc’s fine range of regional appellations. 40% of the handpicked grapes are aged in oak following fermentation. The result is a fat, structured red but it’s not “in your face” it’s really very nicely balanced.

    Classic Languedoc blend of old vines Syrah for the grip and colour and fruit, Grenache for fruit and Mourvedre for perfume. It’s big and dark and 15% alc. A year in 2 and 3 year old oak barrels to soften it out so it’s both great with food or on its own. 91 Parker Points. Drink now to 2025

    A lovely example of South African Sauvignon Blanc which we saw being gathered in last year. No surprise it has Five Stars in the 2017 “Ultra Value Wines” Awards.

  • Brunelli, Ripasso di Valpolicella “Pa’Riondo”, Italy

    The quality of the 2017 vintage was so good that we stocked up so we could see it mature, and it has! Drinking beautifully now.

    Rich, complex but very silky textures make this a delight. The Ripasso technique consists in refermenting a Valpolicella on the sugars and yeast-rich grape skins of the area’s top wine, Amarone.

    This results in the wine becoming full-bodied, with a great concentration of colour and perfume. Corvina Veronese 65%, Rondinella 25%, Corvinone 10%.

  • Felline, Primitivo di Manduria, Italy

    Based on the huge popularity of “Fellone” I thought we should have a closer look at the Primitivo grape. Here’s one of four more, each with a distinct “terroir”. What’s the Italian for “terroir”, I wonder? This one is distinctive due to the red soil of the vineyards. Aged for six months in French oak.

  • Martinez Alesanco, “Nada Que Ver” Rioja, Spain

    So much to say! “Nada Que Ver” in spanish more-or-less means “nothing like anything else”. You will almost certainly not have had a 100% Maturana Tinta varietal before and this is the first one ever made, so enjoy a moment of exclusivity!

    Pedro says “Extraordinary, rare, excellent, unique, and extravagant.”

    Tim Atkin says; 94/100; Nada Que Ver is always among the most distinctive expressions of Maturana Tinta in Rioja. Soft, velvety tannins, aromas of bramble and cut grass, elegant new oak and a ripe, bright finish.

  • Herbert Zillinger, Radikaal Gruner Veltliner, Austria

    I have nothing to add to Jancis Robinson’s tasting note;

    “Selection of their oldest vines from the best vineyards of both Ebenthal and Ollersdorf. ‘A wine that combines both the advantages of loess soil and limestone.’  The must runs directly from the press into the large wooden barrel and is aged there on yeast lees for a year. One year in barrel, one year in bottle. ‘For us from the barren year of 2017 probably our most complete and possibly best wine so far.’ Very heady on the nose but lively and fresh on the palate. Lots of energy and intensity. Really bounces around the palate on the finish. So ripe you might think it was going to be a little sweet but it’s not at all. Such excitement. Long and dense but with lift too. Masterful. 13.5% Drink 2020–2028

  • Brunelli, Amarone Classico Riserva “Campo del Titari”, Italy

    Majestic and exuberant, this superb Amarone Riserva is simply outstanding; a combination of grace and aggressive power. Campo del Titari is a nectar made only in the very best vintages and in limited quantities (3000 bottles), it is a wine for the bold: those who are capable of recognizing the strong emotions that inspired it. Oh, and by the way, a natural 17% alc, so not for the faint-hearted.
