  • Domaine de la Pigeade Vacqueyras Red

    The southern Rhone allows the best of its different terroirs their own Appellations  such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas …..and Vacqueyras. This red blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre has spent nine months in oak barrels and is a powerful example of the best of the area. Rich, silky and complex red wine with good tannins.  Great with a rich foods.

  • Dunico Primitivo di Manduria

    Based on the huge popularity of “Fellone” I thought we should have a closer look at the Primitivo grape. Here’s one of four more, each with a distinct “terroir”. What’s the Italian for “terroir”, I wonder? This one is distinctive due to the sandy soil of the vineyards. Aged for over nine months in French oak it’s a whopping 16% alc but despite that, it’s the most complex of the range, maybe that’s what you expect for £20 a bottle.

  • Brunelli Amarone Classico

    Luigi Brunelli’s Amarone Classico is a perfect example of this wine as defined by Cassiodorus: “drinkable purple of incredible smoothness”. Multiple Gold-medal winner, and for me, the best Amarone I tasted out of over 100 at the Vinitaly Trade Wine Fair in Verona.

  • Domaine l’Abbé Dîne Châteauneuf du Pape

    I “did” Vinisud and went through all 120 different Châteauneuf du Pape producers on show and this was the one that stood out for me. Now there’s a recommendation if ever there was!
    90% Grenache from 120 year-old vines, made up with Syrah and others. There is clean, fresh, juicy fruit. There’s soft, rich peppery fruit, long finish and great aging potential. Super stuff.

  • Brunelli Amarone Classico Riserva “Campo del Titari”

    Majestic and exuberant, this superb Amarone Riserva is simply outstanding; a combination of grace and aggressive power. Campo del Titari is a nectar made only in the very best vintages and in limited quantities (3000 bottles), it is a wine for the bold: those who are capable of recognizing the strong emotions that inspired it. Oh, and by the way, a natural 17% alc, so not for the faint-hearted.

  • Case of six Chateau Lamothe-Vincent Le Grand Rossignol 2016 (Original Wooden Case)

    A sort of Château Petrus vinous “tribute band”……A taste of £3000 wine for £25? Six fab bottles in their original wooden case.

    New vintage 2016 just released. I’ve not tasted it myself yet, but I have such high confidence in Fabien’s skills that I don’t doubt its worthiness for a second and will be stashing away a dozen or so bottles to opened on my 70th birthday (8 years away!)

    It already has the following gongs;

    Gold Medal at the 2018 Bordeaux wines Competition.
    Gold Medal at the 2018 Brussels worldwide Competition.
    Gold Medal – 90/100 – at the 2018 Los Angeles International Wine Competition.
    Gold Medal at the 2018 Entre-Deux-Mers Wines Competition.
    Gold Medal – 90/100 at the 2018 Gilbert & Gaillard International Competition.

    Of the 2015 my tasting notes were;

    “The colour is deep and seductive, dark and dense like essence of Ribena which indicates it will have a long life.

    The nose still has some way to develop despite being decanted (into a magnum claret jug which Mrs H. and I received from Peter Sichel as a wedding present in 1986) some 10 hours before we drank it, but it really does exude parma violet Merlot scents alongside the cigar-box overtone resulting from the 16 months in new oak barrels.

    We sipped and slurped our way through the two bottles as testified by our purple stained lips and teeth.

    The taste revives my memories of 1984 tasting the 82s and 83s direct from the barrel. I enjoy young fine wine but I really must try and wait another year before tasting again.

    It would be a shame to drink it all before it reaches its peak sometime in the next 10-20 years!”

    Fabien says;

    Deep black colour with purple tints. Powerful and complex bouquet of liquorice, black cherry, blackberry, graphite, cedar, toast… Extremely rich though elegant, its full, silky and coated tannins wrap you in softness. Mineral-toasty nuances on the long finish. A pure expression of its rare origin”.
