  • Excelsior Merlot South Africa

Like its white cousin, this is a great party wine and goes well with most foods or just on its own. Rich, juicy Merlot from a favourite Estate of ours. Much recommended by Real Wine Co customers.  45% of the blend was aged in french and american oak barrels for six months. The wine is exceptionally concentrated and fruity.

  • Casabel Lisboa Portuguese Red

Lovely soft red with vibrant cherry-like fruit. A great example of  just how much fun Portuguese wines can be.

This is a soft, yet well-structured, unoaked red from the Lisbon Region. If the Cerejeiras is defined by easy fruit, this has a bit more oomph, so will take richer food. It has lovely clean fruit character.

  • Villa des Anges Reserve Red

One of those wines which make you stop in your wine-tasting tracks. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot (roughly a third of each) has been aged for 14 months in tanks with oak staves (!) before bottling. It’s enough to make you wonder whether or not you want to buy expensive claret again!

Jeff says; “La bouche est élancée, tendue par une fine acidité inflexible, mais enrobée par une matière ronde, veloutée, charmeuse. L’aromatique mêle la crème de mûre aux épices grillées et la vanille.” and who am I to argue?

  • La Remontada by Jeff Carrel

La Remontada – The Comeback. Named in honour of the Champions League’s greatest comeback when Barcelona beat PSG 6-1 to win 6-5 on aggregate back in 2017. And we welcome back this wine under its new name. Haven’t had it for a few years but it’s made like an Italian Ripasso (see our beauty from Brunelli). It’s a declassified (because the method is not recognised – Jeff again) Cotes du Roussillon and it’s very, very lovely! It has that lovely schistous (look it up) character typical of the Roussillon wines but is super-silky-smooth because of the extra maceration of skins. Drink, sip, enjoy.

  • Excelsior Gondolier Merlot

This Merlot pays homage to Gondolier, one of the most renowned thoroughbred racehorses bred at Excelsior. Six months after receiving extensive physiotherapy on an injury to his hind leg that had left him completely lame, Gondolier won the 1985 Durban July, South Africa’s most prestigious horse race. Today Gondolier is regarded as one of the legends of South African horse racing.

This Merlot comes from vines planted on calcareous soils and represent the best Merlot produced on Excelsior.

Deep ruby red colour with a black core. This wine is medium to full-bodied with aromas of blackcurrants, chocolate and earth. The wine has rich but exceptionally soft tannins and a long finish.

  • Rioja Martinez Alesanco “Eco” Organic

So much to say! Tim Atkin gives it 90/100. The 2016 vintage marks the second coupage, or blending, of this organic Tempranillo with 14% Garnacha Tinta, sourced from two plots facing each other at 650 meters in the small village of Badarán. Predominantly fruit with a touch of wood. It is refreshing, juicy, with fine tannins and red and black fruits.”

It’s an oaky Crianza, needs no more aging.

  • Rioja Martinez Alesanco “Nada Que Ver”

So much to say! “Nada Que Ver” in spanish more-or-less means “nothing like anything else”. You will almost certainly not have had a 100% Maturana Tinta varietal before and this is the first one ever made, so enjoy a moment of exclusivity!

Pedro says “Extraordinary, rare, excellent, unique, and extravagant.”

Tim Atkin says; 94/100; Nada Que Ver is always among the most distinctive expressions of Maturana Tinta in Rioja. Soft, velvety tannins, aromas of bramble and cut grass, elegant new oak and a ripe, bright finish.
