Best 'Light and Lower' Wines for the New Year
Hopefully, you’ve enjoyed, shared and savoured some brilliant “real” wine over the festive period.
And whilst many admirable friends of The Real Wine Company will be partaking in “Dry Jan” we believe in a “considered consumption” wine philosophy that we like to apply year round. That means choosing less “cheap mass produced plonk” and instead selecting better wines, made in a more considered way from small independent producers like Laura Lardy, Domaine Laffitte, and the Carneiro Estate
It also means trying lower alcohol wines, which we classify as anything below 12.5%. Lots of low and no alcohol wine alternatives are low on flavour too because the alcohol in the wine holds lots of the wine’s flavour. We select our low alcohol wines because they’re really delicious, full of flavour and fruit. So you can enjoy a glass of really tasty “Lighter and Lower” Real Wine Company wine without the high alcohol hit and without compromising on flavour.
And finally, we might be the only wine company “real” enough (and silly enough!) to tell you to drink less. But we really believe that considered wines made by artisanal producers deserve considered consumption. That means drinking less and in a more thoughtful way is something to consider year round, not just in January.
So, if in 2025 your aim is to drink less, drink more considerately, or to reduce your overall alcohol intake then our light and lower wines might just be for you. We’ve created a list of wine’s that are light in body and delicate in taste and are all 12.5% or under!
The Wine for Easy Sipping: Domaine Laffitte, Sauvignon Blanc/Gros Manseng Gascony 2023, France
- This is our best-selling white wine and it’s a classic for a reason. This Sauvignon Blanc is crisp, fresh, and only 12%
A Light Red is Always Right: Jean Michel Dupre, Grand Cras, Morgon 2022, France
- This Beaujolais from petite producer Jean Michel is truly a treat. It’s beautifully balanced, slightly complex and bursting with flavour which makes it a wine worth savouring and dwindling over too.
A Rosé in any Season: Château d'Or et de Gueules 'Les Cimels' Rosé Organic 2022, France
- We don’t know about you, but spring can’t come soon enough. However, even if the weather won’t improve as soon as we want, let this rosé bring you the first hints of spring. This Provence-style wine is zingy, citrussy, with a warm and savoury spiciness. To make it even better, it’s Organic, Vegan and made by Diane, a fabulous female winemaker.
A Fresh and Light White Wine! Carneiro Estate, Luz Vinho Verde 2023, Portugal
- This is both a customer favourite, and a perfect pour if you want something not too heavy. It’s low in alcohol, at only 12%, but this doesn’t mean it compromises on flavour. It’s delightfully fresh and clean in taste, with citrus colours and floral aromas.
