La Remontada – A Bold French Red for Mid-Advent

Dec 13, 2025

There’s something quietly triumphant about mid-December. The lights of the season are flickering on across towns, the nights drawing in, and the comfort of home feels more inviting than ever. That’s exactly the spirit of La Remontada, from our friend and maker Jeff Carrel — a wine whose name literally means “the comeback.”

This is not a polite, background red. La Remontada arrives with colour so dark purple it borders on opaque. On the nose: black fruits, red-fruit jam, a thread of pepper and a hint of torrefaction (that faint toasted, mineral edge typical of its rugged terroir).

On the palate, it’s full, juicy and fleshy — generous fruit, spice, mineral grip. There’s depth, warmth, a kind of southern-French grit. For December 13th, this feels just right. Imagine coming in from the cold, hanging up your coat, wrapping your hands around a warm plate of hearty food — perhaps a lamb stew, a roast with rich roots, or even a spicy vegetable tray baked in the oven. Pour a glass of La Remontada. Let its dark fruit and subtle spice fill your glass.

It’s a wine for slow conversation, laughter around the table, and savouring the moment. A comeback — not just in name, but in mood. Because even in the depths of winter, there are wines that remind you: warmth, richness, and fellowship are never too far away.

Food pairing tip: grilled meats, spicy roasted vegetables, or a slow-cooked winter stew.

Here’s to mid-Advent, and to winter evenings made a little more special with some 'real wine'
