Excelsior “Paddock” Shiraz South Africa
This is widely regarded as the El Nino year in South Africa. The summer was hotter and riper than normal which required some adaptation in the vineyards to ensure a quality grape harvest. Grapes were harvested earlier than normal to ensure that there was freshness in the wines. The positive aspect of the drought was a very healthy crop with good concentration. The red wines from 2017 are rich and very structured.
30% of the wine was aged in french and american oak barrels for 8 months.Spicy and dried herbs, every bit a Shiraz but with more restraint and structure than an Aussie Shiraz of the same price (in my humble opinion). Good spice and tannins make it good with food but it’s still soft enough to enjoy on its own. Maybe it’s the 15% of Petit Verdot in the blend which elevates it from the norm?Shiraz/SyrahRich & Fruity RedsSouth Africa2017750 ml14%+

Abbotts & Delaunay Syrah
Spicy Shiraz from the south of France. Soft tannins, nice ‘n spicy. Long skin contact for deep colour, a hint of oak aging for complexity….rather a nice wine, really!

Château d’Or et de Gueules “Mon fut c’est du poulet?”
Diane’s husband, Matthieu, demonstrates both his fine winemaking skills as well as his sense of humour with this wine. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin;
Matthieu devised a special cuvee, just one barrel, to mark the birth of his baby five years ago. Whist he was away on business one day, Diane unwittingly blended the barrel together with others destined to be the Trassegum Red final blend.
“Your’e kidding me?!!” said Matthieu on learning his barrel was gone. Translated from “Mon cul, c’est du poulet?” in French. In order not to offend sensitivities he replaced the vulgar “cul” (arse) with “fut” (barrel), and so the fith vintage of this birthday wine is Matthieu’s finest so far in his opinion. Lovely sort, round, fleshy Syrah with easy oak undertones.Shiraz/SyrahBig & Robust RedsFrance2016750 ml13-13.5%
