Carneiro Estate “Luz” Vinho Verde
A lovely new wine just arrived in. Christiana only makes two wines – there’s specialisation for you. Both are Vinho Verde and this is the classic one. Made from a blend of Azal and Loureiro grapes ( who ever heard of those?) this is light and refreshing. Fruity with a hint of bitterness. A still wine but with a zing of natural spritz which characterizes a good Vinho Verde. This spritz does dissipate after a while, though. Great summer wine.White BlendsCrisp & Refreshing WhitesUnoaked WhitesPortugal2022750 ml11%-12.5%13-13.5%

De Meye Unwooded Chardonnay Stellenbosch South Africa
Return of an old friend! Unoaked, fresh, crisp minerally Chardonnay for those who don’t like Chardonnay!
There’s Chardonnay and there’s Chardonnay. Here’s a lovely example of Stellenbosch’s versatility showing how Chardonnay can be crisp, minerally, dry and nothing like the tired, old, over-oaked examples we see too much of in the supermarkets. Might even say “Chablis” if you didn’t know.ChardonnayCrisp & Refreshing WhitesUnoaked WhitesSouth Africa2022750 ml13-13.5%
Sanz Rueda 100% Verdejo
New 2020 vintage just arrived. Hurrah! Rueda has firmly established itself as one of the premium white wine regions of Spain with the white Verdejo grape as arguably its star attraction. This 100% Verdejo epitomises the style – it’s a young, dry, light, fresh fruity style with minerality and complexity. Drink now to end 2022.Other Single Varietal WhiteUnoaked WhitesSpain20182020750 ml13-13.5%

Mooi Bly Chenin Blanc
The return of an old friend. Erik & Liesbet’s Chenin Blanc was the only one to hit the spot for me when we first visited South Africa. This new 2019 vintage is in. Hues of fresh, green edges make the colour very inviting. The nose is almost spicy and minerally at the same time. The palate is complex; dry and minerally but still quite rich. A very satisfying white wine.Other Single Varietal WhiteUnoaked WhitesSouth Africa2019750 ml13-13.5%

Verus Sauvignon Blanc, Slovenia
Verus wines need little commentary. They are all superb, demonstrating what Jancis Robinson called “a purity of fruit” when we shipped their first ever vintage in 2008. Few more than this pure, dry, fruity Sauvignon Blanc.Sauvignon BlancCrisp & Refreshing WhitesDry & Soft WhitesUnoaked WhitesSlovenia2021750 ml13-13.5%

ORANGE WINE “Spectaculaire” by Jeff Carell
Is it a pink, is it a red, is it a white? What’s the story with “Orange” wines? Well, this one does what it says on the tin, as they say. “Vin Blanc de Maceration”, Basically it’s a white wine but fermented on the skins as you would with a red wine. Hence the name; it falls between two stools. It looks oxidised, but it isn’t. It’s fresh with floral notes coming from the Muscat grape which forms 50% of the blend (along with that well-known Sorelli (!)) and has tannins.
It will keep a few days after opening, a bit like a Sherry would.
One of the two best such wines I tasted at the Paris Wine Trade Show in February 2023.

Herbert Zillinger Radikal Gruner Veltliner – Quote of the Year – “Masterful”
I have nothing to add to Jancis Robinson’s tasting note;
“Selection of their oldest vines from the best vineyards of both Ebenthal and Ollersdorf. ‘A wine that combines both the advantages of loess soil and limestone.’ The must runs directly from the press into the large wooden barrel and is aged there on yeast lees for a year. One year in barrel, one year in bottle. ‘For us from the barren year of 2017 probably our most complete and possibly best wine so far.’ Very heady on the nose but lively and fresh on the palate. Lots of energy and intensity. Really bounces around the palate on the finish. So ripe you might think it was going to be a little sweet but it’s not at all. Such excitement. Long and dense but with lift too. Masterful. 13.5% Drink 2020–2028
