  • Excelsior, Purebred, Malbec/Merlot, South Africa

From a great Estate in Robertson Malbec Vines and Merlot combine together with a hint of oak, but mainly left to settle and rest in tank for nine months before release. Blackcurrants, cherries and spices. This is a soft and smooth wine very easy to drink on its own.

  • Sanguinhal, Cerejeiras Lisboa, Portugal

New vintage, new look, same old deliciousness. This is a delightfully fresh, fruity, unoaked red from the Lisbon Region. A blend of Castelão (60%), Aragonez (30%) and Touriga Nacional (10%)….classic, eh?! Well, unknown they may be, but the resultant juicy, fruity, soft and fleshy red is comfort wine par excellence.

  • Chateau d’Or et de Gueules, AB Bio-dynamique Red, France

New vintage just in. Diane and Mathieu’s range of estate wines is now wholly organic. Fresh and fruity with good structure. Do I detect a whiff of strawberries?

  • Sanguinhal, Peninsula de Lisboa, Portugal

Step-by-step we increase the intensity and complexity from the Lisbon Region. This time a blend of Castelão (50%) and Aragonez (50%) which is aged for six months in oak barrels. There’s a beautiful clean structure about this wine (maybe the absence of the rustic Touriga?). Harmonious and spicy. Yum.

  • Sanguinhal, Casabel Lisboa, Portugal

Lovely soft red with vibrant cherry-like fruit. A great example of  just how much fun Portuguese wines can be.

This is a soft, yet well-structured, unoaked red from the Lisbon Region. If the Cerejeiras is defined by easy fruit, this has a bit more oomph, so will take richer food. It has lovely clean fruit character.

  • Chateau d’Or et de Gueules, Parle a mon Fut! Rose, France

Following the runaway success of Mathieu’s Syrah, they have introduced a pink and here it is. It’s a light rosé made from a blend of Syrah and Grenache. Very, very low sulphur levels mean the colour is not as light as some, but it’s lovely and fruity, goes great with tapas and a mere 12% alc. What’s not to like?

  • Birgi, Passole Rosso Appassito, Sicily

This is a really successful blend of Nero d’Avola and Merlot bringing out the best of both varietals in a wine that is better than the sum of its two parts. The lovely rich but slightly light NdA bulked up a bit by rich and soft Merlot.  It undergoes a slight “Ripasso” treatment. “Da uve leggermente appassite” as they say. This gives it extra oomph. Good depth, nice and silky.

  • Birgi, Kinisia Merlot/Nero d’Avola, Sicily

This is a really successful blend of Nero d’Avola and Merlot bringing out the best of both varietals in a wine that is better than the sum of its two parts. The lovely rich but slighly light NdA bulked up by rich and soft Merlot.  This differs from the Passole in that it is predominantly Merlot backed up by NdA rather than the other way round. Then it spends eight months in oak barrels giving it a lovely, spicey and elegant texture. I’m getting blackcurrants and lots of chocolate!

  • Abbotts & Delaunay, Minervois, France

A blend of Carignan and Syrah which really showcases one of the Languedoc’s fine range of regional appellations. 40% of the handpicked grapes are aged in oak following fermentation. The result is a fat, structured red but it’s not “in your face” it’s really very nicely balanced.

  • Chateau d’Or et de Gueules, Les Cimels Costeres de Nimes, France

Super new 2021 vintage which is certified organic and vegan. It is a wonderfully consistent wine which also manages to take on the character of the vintage vagaries. Consistently a best selller, consistently recommended in the Press. So, here you have an even deeper colour than usual, and enough body to make it a real laster!

….and if you like your reds with “minerality”, go no further!

  • Jeff Carrel, Les Darons Languedoc, France

    Les Darons by Jeff Carrel

Big, soft red, yet good acidity makes this a great food wine as well as one to drink on its own. A great example of southern french red wine, bursting with peppery tannins and earthy fruit.

  • Abbotts & Delaunay, Cotes du Roussillon Villages, France

A blend of Syrah and Grenache with a slug of “whole bunch” Carignan which once again showcases one of the Languedoc’s fine range of regional appellations. 40% of the handpicked grapes are aged in oak following fermentation. The result is a fat, structured red but it’s not “in your face” it’s really very nicely balanced.
