  • Excelsior Cabernet Sauvignon South Africa

I don’t always stock this particular varietal, but this vintage won me over – great varietal character of blackcurrants, rich, firm and fruity.

  • Excelsior Merlot South Africa

Like its white cousin, this is a great party wine and goes well with most foods or just on its own. Rich, juicy Merlot from a favourite Estate of ours. Much recommended by Real Wine Co customers.  45% of the blend was aged in french and american oak barrels for six months. The wine is exceptionally concentrated and fruity.

  • Excelsior Viognier South Africa

Great quaffing wine, but rather a superior quaffing wine from a great Estate in Robertson. So no surprises that it keeps winning Gold  at the Michelangelo Awards!

Fat, oily and aromatic; just what you’d expect from a classic Viognier, finishes with that touch of minerality which elevates it from the masses. Lovely summer wine….and any other time!

  • Villa des Anges Reserve Red -One of our 12 Wines of Christmas

One of those wines which make you stop in your wine-tasting tracks. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot (roughly a third of each) has been aged for 14 months in tanks with oak staves (!) before bottling. It’s enough to make you wonder whether or not you want to buy expensive claret again!

Jeff says; “La bouche est élancée, tendue par une fine acidité inflexible, mais enrobée par une matière ronde, veloutée, charmeuse. L’aromatique mêle la crème de mûre aux épices grillées et la vanille.” and who am I to argue?

  • NEW – Kinisia Merlot/Nero d’Avola di Sicilia -One of our 12 Wines of Christmas

This is a really successful blend of Nero d’Avola and Merlot bringing out the best of both varietals in a wine that is better than the sum of its two parts. The lovely rich but slighly light NdA bulked up by rich and soft Merlot.  This differs from the Passole in that it is predominantly Merlot backed up by NdA rather than the other way round. Then it spends eight months in oak barrels giving it a lovely, spicey and elegant texture. I’m getting blackcurrants and lots of chocolate!

    Les Darons by Jeff Carrel

Big, soft red, yet good acidity makes this a great food wine as well as one to drink on its own. A great example of southern french red wine, bursting with peppery tannins and earthy fruit.

  • Château Lamothe-Vincent Bordeaux “Intense” Merlot

Gold Medals at Brussels, Lyon and Gilbert & Gaillard.

The classic Bordeaux blend, of course, is Cabernet/Merlot, and here we have a classic indeed. However, it’s Merlot dominated but with a rare 30% Cabernet Franc. Rich and very well-structured fruit.

  • NEW – Passole Nero d’Avola/Merlot di Sicilia,

This is a really successful blend of Nero d’Avola and Merlot bringing out the best of both varietals in a wine that is better than the sum of its two parts. The lovely rich but slightly light NdA bulked up a bit by rich and soft Merlot.  It undergoes a slight “Ripasso” treatment. “Da uve leggermente appassite” as they say. This gives it extra oomph. Good depth, nice and silky.

  • La Bette Cotes du Roussillon Villages Red by Jeff Carrel

Big, deep colour, good grip due in part to 65% Syrah in the blend but also to Jeff’s preferred style of reds which retain those firm tannins and acidity making them great food wines.

  • Abbotts & Delaunay Minervois

A blend of Carignan and Syrah which really showcases one of the Languedoc’s fine range of regional appellations. 40% of the handpicked grapes are aged in oak following fermentation. The result is a fat, structured red but it’s not “in your face” it’s really very nicely balanced.

  • A Vue de Nez (no added sulphur) by Jeff Carrel Organic Red

Firstly – organic and with no added sulphur. Secondly – it’s a lovely smooth and fruity expression of grassy Cabernet Franc with a dollop of Syrah to beef it up. Also it has a clutch of Gold Medals and 90/100 from American Wine Guru Robert Parker.
