Excelsior “Paddock” Shiraz South Africa
This is widely regarded as the El Nino year in South Africa. The summer was hotter and riper than normal which required some adaptation in the vineyards to ensure a quality grape harvest. Grapes were harvested earlier than normal to ensure that there was freshness in the wines. The positive aspect of the drought was a very healthy crop with good concentration. The red wines from 2017 are rich and very structured.
30% of the wine was aged in french and american oak barrels for 8 months.Spicy and dried herbs, every bit a Shiraz but with more restraint and structure than an Aussie Shiraz of the same price (in my humble opinion). Good spice and tannins make it good with food but it’s still soft enough to enjoy on its own. Maybe it’s the 15% of Petit Verdot in the blend which elevates it from the norm?Shiraz/SyrahRich & Fruity RedsSouth Africa2019750 ml14%+
Excelsior Purebred Red South Africa
From a great Estate in Robertson Shiraz Vines and Merlot combine together with a hint of oak, but mainly left to settle and rest in tank for nine months before release. Blackcurrants, cherries and spices. This is a soft and smooth wine very easy to drink on its own.Red BlendsSoft & Smooth RedsSouth Africa2020750 ml14%+

Big, soft red, yet good acidity makes this a great food wine as well as one to drink on its own. A great example of southern french red wine, bursting with peppery tannins and earthy fruit.Red BlendsRich & Fruity RedsFrance2018750 ml14%+

Villa des Anges Reserve Red
One of those wines which make you stop in your wine-tasting tracks. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot (roughly a third of each) has been aged for 14 months in tanks with oak staves (!) before bottling. It’s enough to make you wonder whether or not you want to buy expensive claret again!
Jeff says; “La bouche est élancée, tendue par une fine acidité inflexible, mais enrobée par une matière ronde, veloutée, charmeuse. L’aromatique mêle la crème de mûre aux épices grillées et la vanille.” and who am I to argue?Mixed BlendSoft & Smooth RedsFrance2020750 ml14%+
Château Lamothe-Vincent Bordeaux “Intense” Merlot
The classic Bordeaux blend, of course, is Cabernet/Merlot, and here we have a classic indeed. However, it’s Merlot dominated but with a rare 30% Cabernet Franc. Rich and very well-structured fruit. Gold Medal winner in Lyon……and four other such competitions!

Chateau Lamothe-Vincent Bordeaux Superieur “Libertae” No added Sulphur
With 75% rich, supple, smooth Merlot backed-up by (frankly rare) Malbec this sulphur-free addition to The Lamothe-Vinvent range yet again breaks new ground.
First of all it’s just simply a really good claret! But the work needed to allow a fine wine to show its best without the addition of any SO2 at all is a testament to the skills of the winemaker and the philosophy whch runs through the Chateau from top to bottom.Red BlendsFrance2018750 ml14%+
Du Plevaux Pinotage South Africa
“A hidden gem” – Platter’s 2016. A masculine Pinotage with a rich dark plum colour, complemented by a structured palate of coffee, chocolate & black berries which support the long soft finish. A minimal five months in barrels make it fruit-driven rather than too oaky.

La Bette Cotes du Roussillon Villages Red by Jeff Carrel
Big, deep colour, good grip due in part to 65% Syrah in the blend but also to Jeff’s preferred style of reds which retain those firm tannins and acidity making them great food wines.Red BlendsRich & Fruity RedsFrance2017750 ml14%+
“The Prince” from The Treaty Port Estate China
From a vineyard established in 2005 on the Shandong peninsula by Chris Ruffle comes his unique, gold-medal winning, Petit Verdot/Arinarnoa blend. Gently oaky, this is a lovely clean, velvety red from one of the world’s new emerging vineyard areas. The Prince rather liked braised pork and Beijing roast duck, could go rather well with this wine!Red BlendsOakey RedsChina2016750 ml14%+
Morillon Blanc by Jeff Carrel
A trusted old friend….rich, fat, with just a hint of oak….I put this in the category of White Burgundy look-alikes. Not the lean Chablis style, but the richer Macon end of Burgundy. Grapes with a touch of botrytis (noble rot) make this a soft, satisfying white. Drink now to end 2022ChardonnayRich WhitesFrance2018750 ml14%+
Abbotts & Delaunay Minervois
A blend of Carignan and Syrah which really showcases one of the Languedoc’s fine range of regional appellations. 40% of the handpicked grapes are aged in oak following fermentation. The result is a fat, structured red but it’s not “in your face” it’s really very nicely balanced.Red BlendsBig & Robust RedsFrance2017750 ml14%+
A Vue de Nez (no added sulphur) by Jeff Carrel Organic Red
Firstly – organic and with no added sulphur. Secondly – it’s a lovely smooth and fruity expression of grassy Cabernet Franc with a dollop of Syrah to beef it up. Also it has a clutch of Gold Medals and 90/100 from American Wine Guru Robert Parker.Mixed BlendRich & Fruity RedsFrance2018750 ml14%+
