  • Shortwood Cabernet/Merlot South Africa

“Best Value Wine Awards” Platter’s 2016. A blend of 60% Cabernet and 40% Merlot. Blackberry aromas from the Cabernet Sauvignon team up with ripe flavours from the Merlot grape, ensuring a soft and long finish. Ideal companion to roasted dark meat and any type of cheese.

  • Excelsior Sauvignon Blanc South Africa

Great quaffing wine, but rather a superior quaffing wine from a great Estate in Robertson! Green appley characters but not sharp. Refreshing and fruity, finishes with that touch of minerality which elevates it from the masses. Lovely summer wine….and any other time!

  • Excelsior “Paddock” Shiraz South Africa

This is widely regarded as the El Nino year in South Africa. The summer was hotter and riper than normal which required some adaptation in the vineyards to ensure a quality grape harvest. Grapes were harvested earlier than normal to ensure that there was freshness in the wines. The positive aspect of the drought was a very healthy crop with good concentration. The red wines from 2017 are rich and very structured.
30% of the wine was aged in french and american oak barrels for 8 months.Spicy and dried herbs, every bit a Shiraz but with more restraint and structure than an Aussie Shiraz of the same price (in my humble opinion). Good spice and tannins make it good with food but it’s still soft enough to enjoy on its own. Maybe it’s the 15% of Petit Verdot in the blend which elevates it from the norm?

  • De Meye Unwooded Chardonnay Stellenbosch South Africa

There’s Chardonnay and there’s Chardonnay. Here’s a lovely example of Stellenbosch’s versatility showing how Chardonnay can be crisp, minerally, dry and nothing like the tired, old, over-oaked examples we see too much of in the supermarkets. Might even say “Chablis” if you didn’t know.

  • Myburgh & Milner “Privateer” Cabernet Franc/Merlot De Meye Stellenbosch

Marcus Milner and Philip Myburgh decided to jointly create a blend which encapsulates a bit of fun, fruit, sun and this Cabernet Franc/ Merlot blend does just that. It’s a serious Stellenbosch creation with good grip and depth, but elegant – not too heavy. Goes well with both full-flavoured food as well as lighter dishes.

  • Du Plevaux Elizabeth Alberta Chenin Blanc/Viognier South Africa

Gold medal at 2018 Vitis Vinifera Awards. Chenin Blanc is South Africa’s “work-horse” white providing the bulk of many cheaper blends. However, there is a Chenin Blanc Society of winemakers dedicated to demonstrating just how good it can be when you put your mind, energy and application to it. Here’s one of those – rich, complex, minerally and with a hint of Viognier to round it off, it’s a delight. Eat with even quite rich foods or on its own.

  • Esona Single Vineyard Boutique Sauvignon Blanc

Pronounced “Air-Sor-Na” this Sauvignon Blanc is the best one I have tasted since we first shipped Zoetendal seven years ago! (remember that?) There is tiny production, just 9250 vines (2.66 hectares). Lovely rich, fat style which has developed into an almost Chablis-like minerality. Great food wine.
