  • Laura Lardy, Les Cotes Fleurie , France

A hugely exciting new range of Cru Beaujolais specially brought in to give us all a vinous Christmas treat, but don’t wait for Christmas.

Fleurie (along with Moulin-à-Vent and Morgon) are my favourite villages in Beaujolais and to repeat an often-told tale; I tasted over 120 different Fleurie producers at the Paris Wine Trade Fair and Laura’s was my stand-out by a long way.

Jean-Michel Dupré’s Morgon at £17 a bottle represents my best memory of what a top Crus Beaujolais should taste like. Then along comes Laura’s Fleurie which is like a turbo-charged version. So full of fruit and powerful “parma violet” flavours and with a structure which comes from eight months aging in large wooden casks before bottling. I can’t think of a finer example of Cru Beaujolais which can be drunk now and which will also age beautifully for a few more years yet.

Drink this with a wide variety of  foods; rich fish dishes, meats, cheeses. Maybe just avoid anything too spicey.

  • Brunelli, Campo del Maestro, Appassimento, Italy

This “cru” is dedicated the grape Master, who managed this vineyard in the past and who dared to suggest an Amarone could be improved by a non-local variety. So 8 grapes became 9 grapes and the wine was declassified. “I can’t believe it’s not Amarone”

  • Brunelli, Recioto della Valpolicella, Italy

A sweet, red, aged wine, Recioto is a traditional wine of the Valpolicella area .Its preciousness derives from its maturation – in very limited quantities – using a method that is both complex and natural, and unfiltered.  Excellent with panettone, strawberries and other wild berry fruits, or served with blue and mature cheeses. Serve at 16°C .

  • Marc Chauvet, Champagne Brut Tradition, France

Really! Honestly! Go no farther than Marc Chauvet for your Champagne. If you don’t want to spend £29.50, then try Blanquette de Limoux, but please don’t resort to cheap Champagne!

To my mind Clotilde’s latest cuvee is her best yet! Soft, full, biscuity and long-lasting (in the palate, that is – I suspect the bottle will be polished off very quickly!)

o 1/3 each Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier
    o 2/3 2015 vintage, 1/3 reserve wine
    o Dosage 12gms
o Disgorged in after 3 years sur lattes

    Previous years’ accolades;

Top 12 Fizzes for Christmas 2012 Daily Telegraph -“”Warm in style, nicely biscuity, with personality but one that will please a variety of tastes. Very box office.”

A previous cuvee was also in Oz Clarke’s 250 Best Wines of 2011: “a fascinating wine,” and recommended by Victoria Moore in The Daily Telegraph November 2010: “delicious.”

and recommended in The Guardian May 2010: “impressive.”

  • Felline, Dunico Primitivo di Manduria, Italy

Based on the huge popularity of “Fellone” I thought we should have a closer look at the Primitivo grape. Here’s one of four more, each with a distinct “terroir”. What’s the Italian for “terroir”, I wonder? This one is distinctive due to the sandy soil of the vineyards. Aged for over nine months in French oak it’s a whopping 16% alc but despite that, it’s the most complex of the range, maybe that’s what you expect for nearly £30 a bottle.

  • Martinez Alesanco, Garnacha Rioja, Spain

    Decanter Magazine 97/100 !!

TIM ATKIN: There was no vintage of this wine in 2018, so fans have been waiting for the 2019 bottling. It comes from the Valdeponzos plot, planted in 1905, which could be a Viñedo Singular – similar to a single vineyard. Refreshing and elegant, due to its altitude and the northern exposure of the plot, it is a Garnacha with lots of colour, minerality, and punch.

  • Martinez Alesanco, “Nada Que Ver” Rioja, Spain

So much to say! “Nada Que Ver” in spanish more-or-less means “nothing like anything else”. You will almost certainly not have had a 100% Maturana Tinta varietal before and this is the first one ever made, so enjoy a moment of exclusivity!

Pedro says “Extraordinary, rare, excellent, unique, and extravagant.”

Tim Atkin says; 94/100; Nada Que Ver is always among the most distinctive expressions of Maturana Tinta in Rioja. Soft, velvety tannins, aromas of bramble and cut grass, elegant new oak and a ripe, bright finish.
