  • Felline Primitivo di Manduria

    Based on the huge popularity of “Fellone” I thought we should have a closer look at the Primitivo grape. Here’s one of four more, each with a distinct “terroir”. What’s the Italian for “terroir”, I wonder? This one is distinctive due to the red soil of the vineyards. Aged for six months in French oak.

  • Verus Pinot Noir, Slovenia

    New wine from the gang – their first red – smart Pinot Noir. Verus wines need little commentary. They are all superb, demonstrating what Jancis Robinson called “a purity of fruit” when we shipped their first ever vintage in 2008.

    Based on the huge popularity of “Fellone” I thought we should have a closer look at the Primitivo grape. Here’s one of four more, each with a distinct “terroir”. What’s the Italian for “terroir”, I wonder? This one  is distinctive due to the calcareous white soil of the vineyards. Aged for nine months in French oak.

  • “Zinfandel” Primitivo di Manduria from Felline

    With the huge success of Fellone, I decided that Primitivo needed a closer inspection, so here’s one of four new ones, all from Felline down in the south of Italy.This one is a slight variation, being styled “Zinfandel Californiano”. That’s what they call it over there but is a strain of Primitivo all the same. Terroir is Mandurian black soil and the 15% wine was aged for six months in French and American oak.

    Only 1300 bottles produced. Barrel-aged, nutty blend of Maccabeu / Grenache Blanc / Grenache Gris. Desert wine. Difficult to describe, so here’s what the maker, Jeff, said himself;

  • Domaine Métairie d’Alon “Le Village” Pinot Noir

    Classy Pinot Noir from the south of France. Hand picked organically grown grapes were fermented in stainless steel vats and 40% of the blend spent six months in 4-6 year old barrels. So you get subtle well-balanced wine which is not overtly oaky. Great alternative to a Burgundy at twice the price!

  • Domaine Métairie d’Alon “Le Village” Chardonnay

    Organically grown and produced by a Burgundian in Limoux. The grapes are hand picked and the juice fermented in small stainless steel vats with long lees aging. A tiny part of the blend was fermented in oak to add nuance, but you don’t get any sort of big oak flavours here, more of a Chablis style.
